Royal Life Saving

On a freezing Monday morning, as clouds rolled in and you could feel the hail beginning to form, the brave children of Room 4 went swimming.

The children were learning about water safety.  With the proximity of the school to the coast, learning how to properly fit a life jacket and how to tread water are valuable lessons that will ensure they stay safe and are well aware of the dangers around water.  Another great opportunity for the children of Room 4.

Photography in Room 4

Welcome to Term 4!  With Market Day Art on the horizon, Room 4 will be focusing on Digital Photography.  The children will be learning about landscape, portrait and macro photography.  They are really enthusiastic about the topic and are already able to describe a photo using such terms as;
  1. Light source
  2. Main subject
  3. Foreground/background
  4. Room to move
  5. Horizons and Vantage Point
  6. Rule of Thirds
Ask them about these terms when looking at a photograph.  I,m sure they would love to share their new found knowledge.  You'll be blown away.

Last wee we had the great opportunity to visit Napier on a Photography Field Trip.  We visited wonderful spots like the Cheesery/Weavery at Hohepa, the Napier Fire Station, and Pania.  Here we heard the interesting crime story of how Pania was stolen 8 years ago and how she was tracked down to someones garden shed!

A huge thank you to all the parents who helped out with transport and supervised the children throughout the day.  We would not be able to head out on such wonderful trips without your support.

Here are some of the children s works over the past few days.  Enjoy!

Financial Literacy in Room 4

Today the children of Room 4 learnt all about banking thanks to Tessa from ASB.  They learnt about the differences between debit and credit cards.  It was a great opportunity for them to discuss the value of money. Don't be surprised if many arrive home asking for jobs over the weekend.  Be prepared for negotiations! The children have also learnt to shop around to find the best deals. Some great life skills.
A saying the children learnt is "When you earn some money what do you do?  Spend some on you and save some too."  A great opportunity for a discussion about the value of money and saving for our futures.

Below is the card used to show the value in taking your time to "shop around".

New Celebrations in Room 4

Children in Room for are motivated to learn.  They are also motivated by the positive behaviour and enthusiasm for learning of others.  A way we are able to recognise this is by achieving ticks on the board each day.  If you get 5 ticks, you then achieve a reward slip.  We have now found a way to recognise the daily champion (the person who achieves the most ticks - the record still held by Finn Grant from 2011 - 14 ticks).

Our new award is the Super Duper Soldier Award.  Lillian is our first champion.  Here is her holding our new trophy.

Maths in Room 4
This week we are focusing on Place Value.  We have discussed a story about the Mayor of a town called Place Value and the results of this were amazing!  Below is Molly is shown standing in front of Place Value town with its Mayor - Mr Place.  Please question your child on this story and have them explain it to you.  You will be blown away by their ability to read huge numbers to you.  Whooopeee!

In term 2 we had been working on Procedures for writing, with a focus on the procedure we had followed when laying down a Hangi.  Tui reading group used the Stop Motion app on the ipad to show the procedure followed to peel and cut an apple.  Here it is below.

Edible Arts Crazy Week

Let the edible madness begin!  The children have enthusiastically been researching fashion from around the globe and linking this with the cuisine from each country.  Now it's time to create!  Having worked together to develop a plan, they are then going to create amazing styles for the catwalk this coming weekend at the Edible Arts Awards.  The classroom has been abuzz with children furiously discussing ideas and learning the art of negotiation and cooperation, as produce ranging from licorice through to pasta is traded among the groups.  As soon as a new bag of marshmallows floods the market, the value drops dramatically. Please all come to our mid-term assembly on Friday 30th May to view these finished creations on the catwalk. Thank you to those mums - Jayne, Kirsty, Fiona, Katie, Saran and Kathleen for your patience and support.  We couldn't have done it without you.
